Chum Bucket on Cell Phone: 500 Points

by Misti Rainwater-Lites

our acting troupe was called the Esteem Machine
we performed comedic and dramatic skits
about suicide/sex/birth control/abortion
in various schools and churches
one full moon morning
we were carpooling from Midland to San Antonio and Houston
for a bunch of different gigs
jackrabbits were running all over
the desolate West Texas roads
I cringed as the van drove over countless rabbits
loudly crunching their small bones
a dork named Jacob
the son of a Unitarian minister
kept crying out with unrestrained glee, "That's ten points! That's twenty
points!"
the bigger the bump, the greater the points
a lot of Esteem Machine members told Jacob to shut his stupid mouth
I think if the casualties had been people
instead of jackrabbits
we could have enjoyed the game
a helluva lot more
chum bucket on cell phone! 500 points!
idiot blasting Paris Hilton on the stereo!
1,000 points!
pregnant fourteen-year-old pushing her first baby
in a stroller toward the welfare office!
3,000 points!
...makes me chuckle just thinking about it
as I sit in traffic
cursing every shitcaked asshole
ever born
