California by Caroline Imreibe
I dreamt we were in California. We had just arrived, by El Camino, after 30 hours and pulled off the road. You said hurry come look from the railing along the expressway and I did. We viewed a sloping terrain coalesced with pulsing earth tones. Homes of sandstone, then greenery, followed with rolling hills of dusty brown. The sun, slipping out in the distance, threatened to melt and dissolve it all. I pulled out my camcorder to capture, and remember. A lo-tech piece of equipment, and I couldn’t get the eyepiece off. You grabbed it from me, frustrated. A snap and something broke, plastic and dangling from the shitty device. I reached to it but you pulled it away, stepping past me and walking on, after tossing it in a ditch of sand. ______________________________________ posted 04.14.08. |
